Purlins are far less steep than girts and trusses, which makes them great for roofs over bay windows because they offer much more support at a lower cost. The main difference between these is the pitch. There are three basic types: purlins, girts, and trusses. ![]() Metal is stronger but may not hold up as long in certain climates (rust). Rafters can be made from wood or metal and both work well for constructing roofs over bay windows. Once you have determined the size of the rafters, you need to build them. The rafters in this example need to be sixteen inches on center for an eight-inch pitch in order to support the weight of your shingles. Use a simple formula for determining what size you should make your framing members:įor example, if you are building a roof over bay windows that are three feet wide by four feet high, the diagonal measurement is twelve. The size of the rafters is determined by the pitch (or slope) of your roof, which in layman’s terms means how steep it will be. This is going to be what holds up all your shingles so it needs to be sturdy enough for the job. Building The Roof Frameįirst, we start with building the roof frame. You don’t need to go out and buy every single power tool on the market, but you will need some of them. You’ll need several carpenter’s levels, framing squares, hammers/drills/bits, saws of all shapes and sizes (circular saws are best), pry bars of various sizes, and a few other hand tools. The first step is to make sure you have the proper tools for building a bay window roof. This guide will show you how to build a roof over bay windows as well as other elements, such as stone veneer, window trims, and roofing. Right now, I use Spectacle's "arrange on left" (or right), and take advantage of how it will cycle between half, 1/3, and 2/3 widths when repeatedly arranging the window with the same command, but being unable to compose "right 1/3 + top half" or "right 1/3 + bottom half" has been infuriating, and is what made me so eager to try your product. That is why we have created this comprehensive guide to help you design and build the perfect roof for your bay window without any of that nonsense! It would be neat if I could predefine areas of my screen which are asymmetrical - e.g. When I use a Veeer shortcut, my windows are brought from whatever monitor they are on to my laptop's main screen (rather than staying on the screen they currently are on, and changing their position within the screen). However, right now it doesn't appear to support multiple monitors very well. Being able to drag by more than the title bar is something I've wanted _forever_. I like that it leverages the `WSAD` and arrow keys, and its options for composing those to get quarters of screens was pretty slick. It has a slick installation and setup workflow. I normally use Spectacle, but I played (very) briefly with this. ![]()
